In late May Sundrop’s red buds open to a showy display of bright yellow saucer shaped flowers. The plant has thin, hairy, reddish stems rising from rosettes. The stems bear alternating deep green lance-shaped leaves. Sundrops flowers during the day and closes by mid-afternoon. The blooms last for a long time, from late spring into early summer.
Sundrops will spread to form colonies through its roots and rhizomes, making it a great choice as a low maintenance ground cover. It is a great source of nectar for insects and hummingbirds, and will host several species of moth on its foliage. Song birds will eat its seeds.
Full sun to light shade, in dry to medium soils. Grows to 1 to 2 feet with a 3 foot spread.
