The rose is the state flower of New York. We all are fond of roses for one reason or another. I remember a ditch that was near my home when I was a child. There were beautiful single pink roses in the summer in that ditch. Was that enchanting rose swamp rose? I do not know but it is the reason I decided to grow wild native roses from seed.

The beautiful single pink flowers that I was drawn to as a child will enchant you too. They are fragrant and about 2 inches across. The leaves are dark green. The shrubby plant can grow 3 to 6 feet tall.  Swamp rose will grow in moist to wet soils but also in regular rich soils. It likes full son but will take some shade.

Swamp Rose can be allowed to naturalize and form a hedge it also makes a good addition to a rain garden. It not susceptible to the diseases that cultivated roses are. You will see a wide range of pollinators on the flowers. The fruit or rose hip will be eaten by birds.
